What type of video content will sell on demand, online?
Unless a Web site has access to the same vast content libraries as Amazon or Netflix Online, it doesn't make sense to try to compete with the leading mainstream movie distributors. They already have the market sewn up, so unless you have millions and millions to invest in a competitive infrastructure, there is an easier way to develop revenue selling conntent. That is - selling specilized content or access to experts who are well known and respected in a popular field.
Specialized content or access to well-known experts in specific areas, is a key to reaching audiences who will pay for pay per view or subscription content or live event access. Examples are, of course, the leading online publications - Wall Street Journal, the Economist, the UK Guardian. These, and other financially successful online publications offer well researched reporting and also specialized marketing and investment reports. They offer cursory content free, then ask customers to subscribe in order to see more details.
But there are other successful pay per view or subscription (pay wall) business models. Those include video, music, and applications, ring tons, Web site templates, and sellers of other content. The common denominator seems to be -- sites that appeal to a specific industry, demographic, topic, theme or geography, have a much better chance of being successful. Perhaps one of the best examples of a non-mass media movie site is Jaman.com, the leading streamer of international and independent films.
